Vascular ultrasound is a technique for visualizing arteries and veins in the body using sound waves.  The exam looks at blood vessels to determine if there are any areas of narrowing, blockage or clots.

The Emory Crawford Long Hospital's vascular laboratory has been performing non-invasive vascular testing since 1977, and continues its leadership in the field today, providing accurate testing using state-of-the-art duplex imagers.

Services:

  • Carotid Duplex Scan: Evaluation of extracranial vessels.
  • Transcranial Doppler Imaging:  Evaluation of intracerebral vessels.
  • Venous Duplex Scan of the upper and lower extremities: Evaluation of deep and superficial venous systems to rule out deep or superficial venous thrombosis.
  • Arterial Duplex Scan: Primarily done to rule out pseudoaneurysm or av fistula.
  • Arterial Evaluation of the upper and lower extremities: Physiological evaluation of arterial flow, via ankle/brachial indices, segmental pressures, pulse volume recordings and digital ppg waveforms.  May also include specific evaluation for thoracic outlet syndrome or palmar arch evaluation.
  • Venous Mapping of upper and lower extremities: Determines superficial vein patency and caliber for use in dialysis access grafts, or for harvesting for use in coronary artery by-pass grafts.
  • Duplex Scan of Bypass or Dialysis Access Grafts: Determines patency and flow in the graft and to rule out stenosis, perigraft fluid or aneurismal sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I having this exam?
Vascular ultrasound is a technique for visualizing arteries and veins in the body using sound waves.  The exam looks at blood vessels to determine if there are any areas of narrowing, blockage or clots. Your doctor may request that the blood vessels in your neck, arms, or legs be examined.

Is a Vascular Ultrasound the same as an X-ray?
No. It is ultrasound imaging, which does not produce radiation and has no side effects.

How long will the exam take?
A vascular ultrasound takes approximately 45 minutes.  You should, however, plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your exam for registration.

Is this kind of exam going to hurt?
No. Vascular ultrasound is a completely painless and non-invasive procedure.

How and when will I receive my results?
You will need to contact your referring physician for your results.  Critical results will be called to the referring physician immediately.  Results that are not critical will be available in your physician's office within 24 hours.
