ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This 2-day program is designed to present a comprehensive review of care of the neurological/ neurosurgical adult. The content presented will assist the experienced neuroscience nurse in preparing for the certification exam (CNRN®).  This content should also benefit Medical-Surgical nurses in caring for their Neuro patients. The time allotted for each system reviewed is an approximation of emphasis of the CNRN exam content.  The Core Curriculum is used as an outline or guide for content.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to discuss for the specific neurologic system:

  1. Physiology and anatomy
  2. Clinical Assessment
  3. Pathologic conditions
    1. Diagnosis
    2. Treatment
    3. Nursing Process

SAMPLE AGENDA

Day 1
(7:30 AM- Registration )

8:00 AM- 5:30 PM

  • CNS Functional Anatomy and Physiology-Overview including Neurodevelopment
  • Neuro assessment, evaluation and Diagnostic; Cranial Assessment, and Diagnostic Imaging; MRI, CT, Myelography
  • Brain Tumors: Contrast and Comparison
  • Degenerative Disorders: MS, MG, Parkinson’s, Dementia’s including Alzheimer’s
  • Seizures: EEG and Anticonvulsant Drugs

Day 2
8:00 AM - 5:30 PM 

  • Head Trauma ; Intracranial Dynamics:CBF,CBV, CPP and CSF Production and Drainage
  • Neuro endocrine: SIADH, Pituitary Malfunctions
  • Vascular Neuropathy: Stroke, AVM, Aneurysms
  • CNS Infections: Encephalitis, Meningitis; Guillain Barre, AIDs, and  
  • Spinal Cord A&P and Peripheral Neuropathies Pathophysiology: Spinal Cord Injuries, Cord Syndromes, Back and Neck Disorders: Diagnosis

Qualifications for the CNRN exam:
  1. The candidate must have current and unrestricted licensure as a registered nurse in the U.S.
  2. The candidate must be a professional nurse engaged in Neuroscience Nursing clinical practice or as a consultant, researcher, administrator or educator who has completed at least two (2) years full-time (4160 hours) of direct or indirect Neuroscience Nursing practice as a registered nurse in the last five (5) years at the time of application.
