Emory University Urology Residency Program

HIGHLIGHTS

Application & Interview Process

Current Residents and Recent Graduates

Residency training in Urology at Emory University includes four years of training in urologic surgery following one year of training in general surgery. An additional four months of general surgery training occurs in the first year of urology (second post-graduate year). Applicants are generally interviewed during their senior year of medical school and commitments made through the AUA matching program. Those applicants matched into urology are required to do their general surgery training at Emory.

The American Board of Urology requires one year of general surgery and four years of urology to be eligible for board examination. Resident Positions Available: three per year.

Rotations in urology take place at the following institutions:

Emory University HospitalEmory University Hospital:
For more than 50 years, Emory University Hospital has served as a regional referral center for patients with difficult, unusual, and complicated problems. The hospital is located on the Emory University campus, close to the Medical School, the Emory Clinic, CDC, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, and the Rehabilitation Center. All patients admitted are private patients of full-time faculty members. The hospital has undergone an extensive modernization program of all of its physical facilities, particularly the addition of ICU beds, and now has more than 600 beds.

Grady Memorial Hospital: Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, GA
Grady Memorial Hospital is a modern 1,000-bed general hospital run by Fulton and DeKalb counties for the purpose of providing emergency care for all citizens and general medical care for the low-income population of these two counties. Residents in training serve as primary physicians for inpatients and outpatients at Grady Hospital. A large number of urology patients have a wide variety of problems or commonly more unusual diseases, or with more advanced disease, than seen in the private office setting. In caring for such patients, residents use diagnostic and therapeutic protocols established by the department, working in consultation and with supervision by members of the faculty. Open and laparoscopic surgery, endoscopic and percutaneous surgery, radical pelvic surgery, trauma surgery, and urethral reconstruction are performed. Residents have much autonomy at Grady, where they learn to manage resources creatively and deal with broad social issues that affect the surgery patient.

Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center:
Located near the Emory University campus, the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a 575-bed primary and tertiary care hospital that provides inpatient and outpatient care for about 450,000 veterans residing in north Georgia. The VA Medical Center is staffed entirely by Emory physicians. A recent addition added three new intensive care units, three additional operating rooms and a greatly expanded research space. Other improvements include a new cardiac catheterization laboratory, noninvasive diagnostic cardiology equipment, a second CT scanner, a new MRI unit, two linear accelerators for radiation therapy, a new lithotriptor, and all new X-ray equipment. Much of this technology surpasses resources available in most Atlanta-area hospitals. New computer technology at the VA provides a highly efficient database for patient diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta:
Approximately six months of residency are spent exclusively in pediatric urology at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite and Egleston. Scottish Rite HospitalClick here for information regarding fellowship programs in Pediatric Urology.

Scottish Rite is located in North Atlanta with 195 inpatient beds (including 39 ICU Beds) and about 15,000 surgeries (inpatient and outpatient) performed annually. There are 27 single-specialty outpatient clinics and 13 multi-specialty clinics for treating complex conditions.

Egelston Children's Hospital

Egleston at Emory University is the largest (235 beds) and most comprehensive hospital in Georgia dedicated exclusively to children. Recognized as one of the three best children's hospitals in the country, Egleston is a referral center for the entire Southeast with several nationally recognized programs including the AFLAC Cancer Center, the Cystic Fibrosis Center, and the Sibley Heart Center.

Both Scotish Rite and Egleston completed major expansion projects in 2007 that will increase beds and OR capacity for the growing population of Atlanta.
