Emory's General Thoracic Surgery Center

General Thoracic
Emory’s General Thoracic Surgery service ranks among the top five academic medical centers in the country, performing more than 1,200 major general thoracic procedures annually. Part of Emory University School of Medicine’s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Center is the only comprehensive thoracic surgery service in Georgia.

Employing minimally invasive methods whenever appropriate, the Center was the first in Georgia to offer video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), a minimally invasive surgical method that represents a major advancement in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions. Currently, the Center is one of only a handful in the state — and the country — that offers all three of the following minimally invasive procedures:

• VATS lobectomy (removal of part of the lung)
VATS sympathectomy to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
• Minimally invasive esophagectomy (removal of part of the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach)

In addition, the Center offers other procedures not available elsewhere in Georgia, including lung transplantation and lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) for Medicare patients.

A Multidisciplinary, Specialized Approach

Complex cases are discussed in multidisciplinary conferences to ensure that each patient receives the most appropriate care for his or her specific presentation. These sub-specialty teams provide expertise in a number of areas, including:

• Thoracic cancer (e.g., lung and esophageal cancer, mesothelioma)
• Swallowing conditions
• Chest abnormalities
• Chest wall conditions
• Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
• Airway conditions
• Benign esophageal diseases such as:
      • Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD)
      • Hiatal hernia
      • Paraesophageal hernia
      • Esophageal diverticula (Zenker's diverticula)

Emory’s highly trained thoracic surgeons are all actively involved in national thoracic surgery organizations and regularly participate in leading-edge clinical trials. In addition, all are members of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center in Georgia.
