Committed to progressive treatment

Our board-certified surgeons provide abdominal wall reconstruction; breast reconstruction (especially immediately after mastectomy); breast lifts, augmentation, and reduction; correction of craniofacial and congenital abnormalities; body contouring; free tissue transfer; head and neck reconstruction; oculoplastic surgery; microsurgery; pediatric plastic surgery; reconstruction following surgery for skin cancer; scar revisions; surgery of the hand and upper extremities; and thoracic reconstruction.
The center is directed by Dr. Grant Carlson (pictured to the right in the adjacent photo). Board certified in both general surgery and plastic surgery, Dr. Carlson's skill-set allows him to treat cancer and reconstruct the damage it can cause, most frequently with breast cancer and head and neck cancer patients. His studies have afforded significant improvement in the outcome of breast reconstruction for patients with breast cancer, particularly his refinement of skin sparing mastectomy in the early years of the procedure.
Our program has consistently been at the forefront of innovation, development, and refinement in plastic and reconstructive surgery. In 1975, Emory plastic surgeons developed the musculocutaneous flap procedure for breast reconstruction that became the foundation for current methods of reconstructive breast surgery. In 1993, endoscopes were adapted for plastic surgery procedures at Emory, and shortly thereafter we became one of the best known services in the country for minimally invasive techniques for breast reconstruction and augmentation; rejuvenation of the forehead, face, and neck; and contouring of the abdomen. Our advances in head and neck reconstruction also stimulated the development of new forms of cervical esophageal reconstruction via free jejunal transposition as well as the use of the omentum for craniofacial reconstruction.
