Conditions and Treatments

Cardiac Surgery

Emory is one of the few centers in the country performing minimally-invasive robot heart surgery. Emory surgeons have performed over 500 minimally-invasive coronary artery bypass procedures. Approximately half of these procedures have been done for single blockages and the other half for patients with multiple coronary blockages. These procedures can be done for patients with single blockages involving the artery on the front of the heart, the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD), or can be performed as a hybrid revascularization procedure for patients with multiple blockages. Hybrid revascularization takes advantage of both a robotic bypass to the LAD and stents to other blockages in the other coronary arteries. This approach combines the best of both worlds (stents and surgery) which results in a minimally-invasive option to treat patients with multiple blockages.

Patients who are ideal candidates for this approach typically have a blockage in the proximal portion of the LAD which is usually best treated with an arterial bypass (left internal mammary artery). In addition, they have blockages in the other arteries (circumflex and/or right coronary arteries) that would otherwise be treated with a stent if they were the only blockages. Combining these two approaches may provide the durability and longevity of traditional bypass surgery with the less invasive option of stenting.

Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ENT)

Emory is one of the few national centers offering robotic assisted surgery for tonsil, base of tongue and laryngeal tumors. Drs. Amy Chen and Trad Wadsworth have advanced training and expertise in Trans Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) and are among the first to perform TORS for tonsil and base of tongue cancer.

This new technology allows highly trained head and neck surgeons to remove tumors without disturbing the jaw or mandible.
