Emory Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Center: Listing for Transplant
Kidney-Pancreas Listing
For local pancreas allocation, recipients may be selected from candidates awaiting an isolated pancreas or a kidney-pancreas combination from the same donor. Recipients are matched based on HLA antigens, blood type, and wait time.
Kidney Listing
Due to the critical shortage of deceased donors, adults can wait on the UNOS list for more than two years before being transplanted. The wait for a kidney may depend on the availability of organs, blood type, tissue type, and the level of preexisting anti-HLA antibodies. Kidneys are allocated based on the region of the deceased donor kidney, it is given first to a zero mismatch antigen recipient in the region. If there is no zero mismatch recipient, the organ is then allocated based on blood type, HLA antibodies and tissue type.
Once a patient has been listed, the dialysis unit or doctor's office will send a monthly blood sample to Emory. This sample is used to check a patient's compatibility with any potential donor kidneys that become available. To remain eligible for a transplant, it is necessary to send in this blood sample every month.
