Liver Transplant Program

The Southeast’s Leading Liver Transplant Program

The Emory Liver Transplant Program is known and respected nationwide. Our experts include liver transplant surgeons, transplant hepatologists, gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, pathologists, radiologists, and nurses. Your entire care team is experienced in treating liver failure. Our mission is to provide our patients with the unsurpassed, comprehensive care they deserve.

When the liver stops working correctly, it cannot detoxify the blood and store nutrients. Sometimes liver disease can be managed with medications. When medications aren’t enough, Emory has surgical and nonsurgical treatment options. Our treatment options include:

  • Liver resection (removing a diseased part of the liver)
  • Liver blood test (ERCP)
  • Shrinking the size of tumors on the liver (radiofrequency ablation)
  • Radiation oncology
  • Liver transplants

Our cutting-edge research in liver transplantation also provides our patients with treatments available at only a few centers around the country. These include liver transplantation in HIV-positive patients and patients with cancer of the bile ducts.

Experience Matters

Emory Healthcare performed Georgia’s first liver transplant in 1987. Our Liver Transplant Program ranks among the best in the nation for adult liver transplant volume, and our quality outcomes are higher than the national average.

Emory University Hospital is the only hospital in Georgia with an intensive care unit and an expert team dedicated to liver failure and transplants. This experience and success ensure our patients receive the lifesaving care required for liver transplants.

In addition, we have the only Liver Transplant Program in the Southeast to offer the Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System (MARS®). MARS® is a liver support system that can help some patients until they receive a transplant or recover from liver failure.

Support Before and After Surgery

Patient education and other resources are part of our care programs. For patients who travel to the region, we offer the Mason Guest House , a low-cost home-away-from-home.
