Hip Conditions

In the Atlanta area and beyond, the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center is the place to go for the most advanced hip care available. Our board-certified orthopedic surgeons and specialists are world-renowned for innovation, research, and training in surgical and nonsurgical treatment of hip conditions.

Some of the hip conditions our orthopedic doctors treat include:

Acetabular Labral Tear

Although usually associated with hip impingement, the labrum or "O-ring" of the hip joint can be torn by an injury to the hip. If torn, the labrum can be removed or repaired with arthroscopic surgery.

Arthritis

Avascular Necrosis

Avascular necrosis, or osteonecrosis of the femoral head, is a condition that results when blood flow to the head ball of the hip is reduced or stopped, resulting in the death of cells in the bone tissue.

Development Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH)

Dysplasia of the hip occurs as a result of improper formation of the hip socket (the acetabulum) during growth of the socket. The result is a socket that is too shallow. In severe cases, dislocation of the ball from the socket can occur.

Failed Total Hip Replacement

Although relatively rare, hip replacement surgery (hip arthroplasty) can be unsuccessful. If unsuccessful, repeat or revision hip replacement may be necessary.

Fracture

Most commonly, hip fractures occur in the femoral neck (the area of bone that joins the ball to the shaft of the femur bone). This fracture is usually treated with a partial or total hip replacement.

Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI, Hip Impingement)

Femoroacetabular impingement, also known as FAI or hip impingement, is a condition in which there is abnormal contact between the ball (aka the femoral head) and the rim of the socket (the acetabulum).

Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome results in pain over the outside of the hip and usually does not result in pain in the groin area.

Groin Pain

Groin pain is often a sign of problems within the hip joint. Pain within the hip joint is most often, but not always, experienced in the groin.

Hip Preservation

Hip preservation involves a variety of mostly surgical techniques designed to allow you to keep your hip when activity modification or therapy is not beneficial. This can range from minimally invasive hip arthroscopy to more complex surgery.

Snapping Hip Syndrome

"Snapping" refers to a noise and catching motion of the hip that occurs with certain movement. A snapping hip is usually the result of soft tissue structure catching on one of the bones around the hip.
