Metro-Atlanta Neighborhoods
The neighborhoods surrounding the Emory campuses define the personality of Atlanta: uniquely diverse, active, vibrant, thriving, dynamic, historic, and welcoming. Here are just few:
For world class shopping twenty minutes from campus, visit Buckhead. Lenox and Phipps are two huge malls located across the street from each other at the intersection of Lenox and Peachtree roads. Buckhead is also home to many of Atlanta 's upscale hotels and restaurants. Weekend nights will feel like an explosion of fun, crowds, music, and dancing.
A classic, family-friendly community, Brookhaven is centrally located near our Executive Park and Emory Saint Joseph’s locations. It’s loaded with shopping, restaurants, great schools and established neighborhoods. A short drive to the heart of Atlanta, Brookhaven also offers easy access to public transportation.
Decatur is a town located just beyond Atlanta city limits with close proximity to Emory Decatur Hospital, Emory University Hospital, Emory Rehabilitation Hospital and many of our physician group practices. The town square is the heart of a great shopping/entertainment district. Many of the stores are locally owned and Decatur is known for its restaurants. There's often live music and other events on the town square.
The Emory University campus, including Emory University Hospital and the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University is located in a historic residential neighborhood called Druid Hills. Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead of NYC's Central Park fame, the neighborhood has tree-lined streets and stately, elegant homes. (It was the setting for the film Driving Miss Daisy, Academy Award winner for best picture in 1989!) This magnificent urban neighborhood was conceived and executed in 1893 as one of Atlanta ’s first suburbs. Yet it remains today essentially unchanged as an “ideal residential suburb.”
Whether you are looking for world-class musical artists, avant-garde art galleries, or your favorite professional sports team, look for them in downtown Atlanta. Underground Atlanta, the Georgia World Congress Center, the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, CNN Center and the Olympic Park are just a few of the attractions you’ll find downtown—not to mention major world-class hotels and shopping, family-operated restaurants, business headquarters, and city parks. Downtown is just six miles west of the Emory University campus and only blocks away from the Midtown campus.
Near Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Dunwoody is known for its local restaurants and fantastic shopping, Dunwoody residents enjoy a wealth of amenities 17 miles north of downtown Atlanta. A nature center, parks, great schools and established subdivisions make Dunwoody a popular place to call home.
A gathering spot for the young, the hip and the cool, L5P is funky and fun with interesting restaurants and shops. Located at the intersection of Moreland and Euclid avenues, the neighborhood is a 10-minute drive from either Emory Midtown or Emory University campuses.
Emory Johns Creek Hospital is in the heart of this northern suburb. Johns Creek has one of the best public education systems in the country and plenty of family friendly activities. The diverse community is traversed by walking trails and features lots of amenities like shopping centers, entertainment venues and parks.
Emory University Hospital Midtown and Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown is located on the southern tip of Midtown, a part of town that continues to offer an ever-changing variety of activities and nightlife. Trendy restaurants and nightclubs aren’t the only thing in Midtown though! The center of the neighborhood is the beautiful Piedmont Park—home to many of Atlanta’s festivals and concerts, as well as a great place to walk, bike, run, or have a picnic!
Stonecrest has suburban touches with city convenience. Emory Hillandale Hospital is located in Stonecrest, which has ample shopping opportunities and parks, including New Black Wall Street Market, Stonecrest Mall and the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. It provides plenty of things for families to do within easy reach of downtown Atlanta.
Nestled 15 miles northeast of Atlanta, Tucker is home to Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Hospital, Emory’s Northlake campus and several physician practices. It’s just a short drive to the Emory Decatur Hospital and Emory University Hospital campuses. Outdoor events on Main Street and the city’s numerous parks are a central part of community life.
Shops and restaurants stretch the length of Highland Avenue, but you can find a sizable clustering at the intersection with Virginia Avenue. Browse antique shops and boutiques, shops for CDs or gifts, and have dessert and coffee at one of the many cafes and restaurants. The neighborhood is ten minutes from Emory University Hospital and Emory University Hospital Midtown.
This up-and-coming area is on the west side of Midtown. The modern industrial building facades give the area a stand-out character making this an attractive scene for many young professionals. The great views of the city, contemporary art galleries, live music and many trendy shops and boutiques make this a hot spot that is about 10 minutes from Emory University Hospital Midtown.
