Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) affects the arteries. It most commonly involves the renal arteries in the kidneys and the carotid arteries in the neck. We help you manage the symptoms and complications of this nonatherosclerotic, noninflammatory condition.

Helping You Manage Your Symptoms
Fibromuscular Dysplasia Symptoms
FMD can occur in men and women at any age. It typically occurs in women around age 40.
Hypertension is the most common symptom. Other signs of FMD include:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Strokes
If your FMD affects the renal arteries, you are at risk for renal artery stenosis, elevated blood pressure, and worsening kidney function.
When FMD impacts the carotid arteries, you could develop carotid artery dissections and stenosis, coronary artery dissections, aneurysms, dissections, and stenosis of other arteries.
Understanding Fibromuscular Dysplasia
So far, we don’t know the genetic cause of FMD. Some evidence supports autosomal dominant inheritance in families in a small number of FMD patients.
The condition may present with features like connective tissue disorders like Ehlers Danlos syndrome.
A genetics evaluation and genetic counseling help us asses your risk for other connective tissue conditions and the likelihood of your passing the condition to your children.
