Neuromuscular conditions affect the peripheral nerves, muscles and the connections between them. We use advanced lab tests to make the right diagnosis so you get the best possible care.
Neuromuscular Program
The Right Diagnosis for the Best Care
Conditions We Treat
The Neuromuscular Program at Emory Healthcare is recognized and supported by the national ALS Association, the ALS Association of Georgia and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
We treat and manage a wide range of conditions, including:
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease) and other motor neuro disorders
- Guillain-Barre syndrome
- Muscular dystrophies
- Myasthenia gravis and other neuromuscular junction disorders
- Peripheral nerve disease
Expert Labs for a Confident Diagnosis
To get the best care, you need the right diagnosis. Our two comprehensive labs provide vital information to your doctor. They include:
Electrodiagnostic laboratory.
We offer nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG) tests to measure how well the nerves and muscles communicate. We also provide neuromuscular ultrasound. We perform more than 1,500 tests each year.
Neuromuscular pathology laboratory.
We prepare and interpret nerve and muscle biopsies to diagnose neuromuscular conditions. As a regional referral lab, we serve Emory Healthcare patients plus patients from across Atlanta and the Southeast.
Better Neuromuscular Care Through Research
Our doctors and scientists lead and take part in basic and clinical research. We study conditions of the motor neurons, muscles and nerves. Our work means you have access to clinical trials for ALS and related neuromuscular disorders.
Our research areas of focus include:
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Experimental ALS treatments
- Genetics of ALS
- HIV-related neuropathies and myopathies
- Motor neuron degeneration
- Pathogenesis and treatments for ALS and peripheral nerve conditions
