What Is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?
Oral surgery includes specialty dental procedures performed on your gums, jaw, or teeth. This includes routine and complex oral surgeries, such as abscess treatment, dental implants, and wisdom tooth extraction.
Maxillofacial surgery corrects or treats conditions or injuries of the face, jaw, or mouth. Treatments reduce or relieve pain and improve function and appearance. We treat conditions that affect the:
- Bones and tissues of the face and jaw
- Roof of your mouth (palate)
- Sinuses
- Teeth
Oral and Maxillofacial Services
We offer help, guidance, advice and treatment for conditions affecting the teeth, mouth, jaws and face, including:
- Removal of adult and children’s* teeth, including wisdom teeth
- Managing pain and infections of the teeth, jaws and face
- Uncovering teeth to help assist orthodontist adjusting them
- Managing children who have problems with their teeth and jaws*
- Putting patients to sleep during their procedure to make their experience comfortable, relaxed and painless
- Placing dental implants to replace your lost or missing teeth
- Correcting the position of teeth and jaws to provide you with a good bite and an attractive appearance
- Reducing your jaw pain and improving your ability to bite and chew
- Repairing and rebuilding your jaw joints (including joint replacement) to decrease pain and allow you to eat and chew
- Removing growths, bumps and lumps
- Treating broken bones, including the jaws and face
- Treating damage to nerves that causes numbness of the tongue, jaws and lips

* We provide pediatric oral and maxillofacial care at Children’s Hospital of Atlanta in Egleston.

Referrals
A referral is generally not required for our services. However, if you are looking to have teeth extracted (removed) or dental implants placed, we require a referral from your dental provider.
