Emory Hillandale Hospital’s Violence Prevention Program

More than 48,000 people die from gun-related injuries each year. Up to 40 percent of hospitalized patients with gun-shot wounds who initially survive are re-injured within five years.  With support from DeKalb County, Emory Hillandale Hospital has developed a hospital-based violence prevention and trauma recovery program to prevent gun violence and reduce the risk of recurrence.

“It’s really important that we make sure our priorities, values and mission align with the needs of the community, and what individuals are expressing is important to them.”
— Janikqua, Director of Violence Prevention Program at Emory Hillandale
It’s trauma; oftentimes we see the physical wound and don’t think of the mental damage that’s being done.
