From Sideline to Serve: Student-Athlete Kendall’s ACL Comeback
Written by: Hally Spiller

Student-athlete Kendall knows the thrill of the game. From a young age, she’s been physically active, from sports to dance to gymnastics.
Playing with her A5 Volleyball Club team, her world was turned upside down when she tore her ACL . "Initially, I was in denial," Kendall says. "But when my parents explained the doctors' findings, time stood still."
Tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a common sports injury but has a long timetable for treatment and recovery. That’s because it’s a critical ligament of the knee joint, connecting the thighbone to the shinbone.
Kendall would need surgery and months of recovery to rebuild muscle and regain mobility in her knee. The news was devastating to the incoming high school freshman and volleyball player, especially as it meant missing her inaugural high school varsity season and her club team’s season.
For an athlete accustomed to constant movement, the transition to the sidelines was a significant challenge. "I felt like I was falling behind," she says. However, with the support of her family and the expert care of Emory Sports Medicine, Kendall shifted her focus to recovery.

The Care Team Cheering Her On
Kendall’s injury occurred on Mother’s Day—and for her mom Priscilla, Emory Healthcare provided hope and reassurance during a difficult time for their family. Kendall’s care was led by John Xerogeanes, MD, orthopedic surgeon and chief of Emory Sports Medicine, and supported by a team of clinicians.
“ACL injuries, though common in athletes, are undeniably devastating,” says Dr. X, as he’s known by his patients. “At Emory Sports Medicine, we're dedicated to providing the expertise and technology necessary to guide athletes back to their peak performance. Kendall's recovery exemplifies the power of teamwork—her unwavering dedication to physical therapy, combined with our collaborative approach, have been instrumental in her success."
The Emory Sports Medicine team treats athletes of every age, level and sport, from student-athletes to casual enthusiasts to competitive athletes. As Emory Healthcare is the official team healthcare provider for Atlanta’s top teams—Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Dream, Atlanta Vibe and Atlanta United, to name a few—Kendall would be getting the same treatment as the professional athletes she admires.
"From the very beginning, Emory gave us hope," Priscilla says. "We chose Emory because every single person we encountered was genuinely kind and professional. Right away, the Emory team made us feel like part of their family."

Physical and Mental Battles: The Path to Recovery
Recovery is a two-way street, where patients are an active part of the process. "I knew I had to put in the hard work to get back in the game," says Kendall.
That meant grueling physical therapy sessions and dedicated strengthening exercises. But the physical obstacles were only part of the battle. She says, "The mental part of recovery is a much tougher battle.”
While the road was tough, Kendall's experience with the Emory Healthcare team has been positive. "From the moment I stepped foot in Emory Sports Medicine’s physical therapy facility, I knew I had my work cut out for me," she says. "But having my physical therapist by my side, supporting me throughout my journey, is amazing. They are intentional with my recovery and always lifting my spirits. They actually made me excited to go to physical therapy!"
Progress wasn't always linear. "At first, I felt like I was making no progress," Kendall says. "There were times I wanted to cry, but instead, I forced myself to work harder."
One particular challenge was a seemingly simple act—straightening her leg. "Three weeks in a row, I couldn't do it. I sat on the edge of my bed every night trying to work on getting my leg to straighten. Eventually, I was able to fully straighten my leg out!"
Priscilla expresses immense gratitude for the care her daughter received. "Dr. X and the entire Emory Sports Medicine surgery team and the entire Emory physical therapy team put our minds at ease," she says. "Emory made it possible for Kendall to once again play the sport she loves. We couldn’t be more grateful."
Kendall's recovery continues, and she's excited about returning to competitive play with her M2 Volleyball Club team and her high school team. She recently had the honor of joining the League One Volleyball (LOVB) Atlanta Volleyball match on March 7, 2025 to launch the first serve. More than 50 Emory Healthcare employees cheered on Kendall and the team from the sidelines. Emory Healthcare is proud to be the official team provider for LOVB Atlanta Volleyball.
With the support of her family and the Emory Sports Medicine team, Kendall is well on her way to reclaiming her place on the court, stronger than ever.
