Bone Metastasis Program

Welcome to the Bone Metastasis Program

Welcome to the Bone Metastasis Program, part of the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center. Our mission is to evaluate and treat patients whose cancer has spread (metastasized) to their bones and soft tissues. We offer personalized treatment plans and innovative, compassionate care to support each patient’s unique needs.

Metastatic cancer is cancer that starts in another area of the body and spreads to the bones. It happens when cancer cells from the breast, prostate, lungs or other areas start to grow in the bones.
Our program takes a comprehensive team approach, which includes fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons specializing in musculoskeletal oncology. Supported by an academic health system, our program offers patients, and their families access to the latest technology, pioneering research, and a seamless link to other specialized care within the health system.

Treatment for Metastatic Bone Cancer
Treatment for metastatic bone cancer typically focuses on managing symptoms, improving quality of life, and slowing cancer progression.
  • Treatments usually include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy, which aim to control cancer cells throughout the body.
  • Radiation therapy is frequently used to alleviate pain and local tumor control.
  • Medications and therapeutic agents that treat and prevent bone damage caused by cancer, such as bisphosphonates or denosumab, can help reduce bone fractures and other skeletal-related complications.
  • In some cases, surgery may be recommended to stabilize affected bones or remove tumors. Treatment plans are often personalized based on the type and extent of cancer, overall health, and individual goals.
