What Are Qualitative Platelet Disorders?
Platelets are essential to blood clotting, so when a person has a normal number of platelets, but they don’t work the way they should, they have a qualitative platelet disorder. Platelets are tiny, irregularly shaped blood cell pieces (called fragments) that play an important role in the formation of blood clots. There are several ways platelets may not work properly, which results in platelet disorders. Some are not fully understood and may result in a diagnosis of an "unspecified platelet disorder."
Common platelet disorder types include:
- Bernard-Soulier Syndrome
- Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia
- Platelet storage pool disease (also called platelet granule disorder)
- Gray Platelet Syndrome
