Our care team of nationally and internationally recognized practitioners have specialized training and expertise in tailoring care for platelet disorders to your needs. We know these disorders touch many facets of your life, and so does your care at Emory.

What Are Qualitative Platelet Disorders?

Platelets are essential to blood clotting, so when a person has a normal number of platelets, but they don’t work the way they should, they have a qualitative platelet disorder. Platelets are tiny, irregularly shaped blood cell pieces (called fragments) that play an important role in the formation of blood clots. There are several ways platelets may not work properly, which results in platelet disorders. Some are not fully understood and may result in a diagnosis of an "unspecified platelet disorder."

Common platelet disorder types include:

  • Bernard-Soulier Syndrome
  • Glanzmann’s Thrombasthenia
  • Platelet storage pool disease (also called platelet granule disorder)
  • Gray Platelet Syndrome
  • Delta-Storage Pool Deficiency
  • Platelet signaling disorders
  • Aspirin-like Platelet Defect

The program includes clinical trials as well as translational and basic research in platelet disorders. Our patients have the option to participate in cutting-edge research and contribute to scientific and medical knowledge in a variety of innovative ways that could not only help them but also help the larger community of affected patients.
