Regain Control Over Male Incontinence

Male incontinence can be a nuisance. But options are available to treat the condition and improve your quality of life.

At Emory Healthcare, our experienced urology team offers you the support you need.

What is Male Incontinence?

Incontinence is when you unintentionally leak urine. There are three main types:

  • Overflow incontinence, not completely emptying your bladder
  • Stress incontinence, when coughing, sneezing or exercising
  • Urge incontinence, strong and uncontrollable urges to urinate

You may have more than one type.

Causes of Male Incontinence

Several issues can cause this condition. Among them:

  • Bladder function, weak bladder muscles or nerve damage
  • Lifestyle factors, smoking or use of alcohol or caffeine
  • Prostate problems, enlarged prostate or prior prostate cancer treatment
  • Urinary tract infections, that can irritate the bladder

The good news is that effective treatments are available.

Diagnosing Male Incontinence

First, your doctor will ask about your medical history and perform a physical exam. They may also take samples of your urine and blood. Sometimes, you may have an ultrasound of your bladder.

You may be asked to keep a bladder diary. Here you will record:

  • Every time you urinate
  • How much urine came out
  • If you leaked
  • What you ate and drank that day

Additional tests show how well your bladder fills and empties. Your doctor will determine if any other tests will help in deciding a treatment path for you.

Urinary incontinence can be improved in a number of ways. Emory Urology offers lifestyle, medication and surgical treatments that can make a meaningful difference.
