Male Infertility Treatments

If you and your partner are having problems conceiving a baby after 12 months of unprotected sex, male infertility might be the cause.

We can help. We offer patients several treatment options.

Your doctor will help you choose the best treatment option for your male infertility. Your treatment will depend on the cause of your condition.

Treatment options may include lifestyle changes, medication or surgery

Lifestyle Changes

Simple lifestyle changes can affect male fertility. We suggest you:

  • Avoid recreational drugs
  • Eliminate or limit alcohol, marijuana and tobacco
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Manage stress

Medications for Male Infertility

If lifestyle changes aren’t working, there are medications your doctor may wish to try. These include:

  • Antibiotics to clear infections that affect sperm quality
  • Hormone therapy to stimulate sperm production

Surgical Fertility Treatments

If lifestyle changes and medication aren’t enough to treat your male infertility, there are good surgical options. At Emory Healthcare, our experts offer:

  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): ICSI is an option if you have a low sperm count or your sperm has little movement. Your doctor pulls sperm from your semen sample. They inject a single sperm into a woman’s egg to fertilize it. This is a form of in vitro fertilization (IVF).
  • Microdissection Testicular Sperm Extraction: Your doctor may recommend this procedure if you don’t produce enough sperm or if your sperm can’t travel to your penis. Your doctor retrieves sperm directly from the testicles. Then the sperm is used in assisted reproductive treatments like ICSI and IVF.

Talk with your doctor about the best treatment options for you.
