Aortic Dissection

Detecting a Life-Threatening Condition

Your body’s main artery is the aorta. You rely on it to carry oxygen-rich blood from your heart to your organs and limbs. Sometimes, the layers in the wall of your aorta can tear and cause internal bleeding. That separation is an aortic dissection—and it’s a life-threatening condition.

The cardiovascular specialists at Emory Heart & Vascular have the expertise to detect and diagnose your aortic dissection. We will work with you to choose the treatment option that best fits your needs.

When you need expert aortic dissection care, our pioneering surgeons are here for you. They constantly research new aortic devices and treatments. This lets us manage conditions we couldn’t treat in the past.

What Is an Aortic Dissection?

An aortic dissection is a tear in a weak area of your aorta. When this happens, blood rushes into the inner and middle layers of your aorta wall. A dissection that breaks through your aorta’s outer layer is usually fatal.

You can experience a thoracic (chest-area) or abdominal (stomach-area) dissection. This problem may develop if you have an aortic aneurysm. But a dissection is also possible without an aneurysm.

Aortic dissections are not common. They occur most often in males in their 60s and 70s. Dissections can be difficult to diagnose. They have symptoms that are similar to several other conditions.

Experts with Emory Heart & Vascular offer specialized surgical treatment for aortic dissection.
