Our accomplishments in cardiac surgery include:
- 1950s: Performed one of the first surgeries for mitral valve stenosis in the U.S.
- 1960s: Performed first open-heart surgery and aortic valve replacement
- 1970: First coronary bypass procedure
- 1980s: Andreas Gruentzig, MD, built Emory’s prominent interventional cardiology program
- 1985: Georgias’s first heart transplant was performed at Emory University Hospital
- 2016: Emory cardiothoracic surgeon Douglas Murphy, MD, and team, achieved a world record after completing his 2,000th robotically assisted mitral valve surgery. More than anyone else in the world.
