Abdominal Aorta Surgery

Abdominal Aorta Surgery

The aorta is your largest artery. It carries blood away from your heart to your body.

If your aorta has a weak spot where it expands or balloons, this is an aortic aneurysm.

Sometimes, an aneurysm can tear or burst. When this causes the aortic wall to rupture, this is an aortic dissection.

Aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections can be life-threatening and need medical treatment. One treatment option, abdominal aorta surgery, treats:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm in the stomach area
  • Aortic dissection
  • Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm that extends from the chest to the stomach

Your treatment depends on your condition and the part of the aorta that is affected.

Types of Abdominal Aorta Surgery

Emory Heart & Vascular provides advanced care for all aortic conditions, including complex cases.

We perform open heart surgery and endovascular, or minimally invasive, procedures. These include:

  • Endovascular infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm repair - Your surgeon inserts a stent graph into the aorta to keep it open.
  • Endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm and iliac artery aneurysm repair with iliac branched device - This procedure involves inserting a stent graph into the aorta. It also repairs an aneurysm in the iliac artery in the pelvis.
  • Fenestrated endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair - Your surgeon uses a custom-designed graft to support both the aorta and the arteries that lead to the liver, bowel and kidneys.
  • Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAA) – Extent III - This procedure requires removing part of the aorta and replacing it with an artificial graft.
  • Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAA) – Extent IV - This surgery is similar to the TAA Extent III but covers a larger region of the aorta, from the neck to the kidneys.
