Vascular Surgery

Emory's vascular surgery program is one of the oldest, most established and largest in the United States. Our team treats more patients with vascular conditions than any other program in Georgia.

Vascular disease impacts your blood vessels and makes it harder to move oxygen and nutrients around your body.

Emory Heart & Vascular provides innovative, advanced treatments for a wide range of conditions. Some of the most common include:

  • Aortic Aneurysm Repair: In this minimally invasive procedure, a surgeon uses a thin tube (catheter) to insert a stent. This supports the weak part of the aorta. Carotid Artery Stents and
  • Carotid Endarterectomy: Surgeons make a small incision and use catheters to insert stents and remove plaque buildup.
  • Minimally-invasive Procedures: Your surgeon uses a catheter to open your artery with a device. We may insert a tiny stent to keep the artery open.
  • Surgical Revascularization: If several arteries are severely blocked, a surgeon removes a small portion of a vein in your leg. They use it to reroute blood flow around the blocked arteries.
  • Varicose Vein Treatment: If a non-surgical option doesn’t work for your varicose veins, we offer a variety of surgical procedures including:
  • Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT): Heat from a catheter makes the vein close and seal shut.
  • Radiofrequency ablation (VNUS Closure): This is the same as EVLT but uses radiofrequency instead of a laser.

These are just some of the vascular surgeries we perform at Emory Heart & Vascular. Your doctors will develop a personalized treatment plan for you.

Vascular disease can affect your arteries, lymph vessels and veins. Many conditions may require vascular surgery, including: aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral artery disease (PAD), and varicose veins

Delicate Expertise for Artery and Vein Conditions

More than 80 million Americans have health conditions related to their blood vessels. These can be blood clots or varicose veins, among others.

Your blood vessels are tiny and fragile. The smallest ones are about one-third the width of a single strand of hair. The largest blood vessel is only about one inch across.

Treating blood vessel conditions requires delicate and safe techniques. In the 1990s, Emory Heart & Vascular led the move to minimally invasive treatments.

This lets us deliver care through one tiny incision. These procedures lower your risk of bleeding, pain and infection. They also shorten your recovery time.

Emory Healthcare continues to develop and refine groundbreaking procedures to treat artery and vein conditions. We provide excellent care, promote vascular health and train the best vascular surgeons in the world.
