Descending and Thoracic Aorta Repair

Descending and Thoracic Aorta Repair

Treatment To Restore Blood Flow to Your Body

Your descending aorta travels from just below your collarbone to your abdomen. This vessel supplies oxygen-rich blood to your organs and tissues.

The part of the descending aorta between your collarbone and diaphragm is your thoracic aorta.

Damage to your thoracic aorta may require surgical treatment.

Emory Heart & Vascular surgeons offer the latest thoracic aorta repair surgeries to treat aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection. We also treat thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. This is an aneurysm that involves both the thoracic and abdominal aorta.

An aortic aneurysm stops blood from reaching important organs and tissues. An aortic dissection is a tear in a weak area of your aorta. When this happens, blood rushes into the inner and middle layers of your aorta wall. Both conditions can be life-threatening.

Thoracic Aorta Repair Options

Thoracic aorta repair options vary based on where your aorta is damaged. Your doctor will discuss your treatment options.

At Emory Heart & Vascular, we offer the following:

  • Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR): TEVAR is a minimally invasive procedure to repair damage along the thoracic aorta. During TEVAR, surgeons thread a thin tube (catheter) through an artery in your groin. Through this tube, surgeons guide a stent to the damaged section of your aorta. This stent reinforces the aorta’s walls.
  • Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair: TAAA repair is a more complex surgery to repair damage to areas along both the thoracic and abdominal aorta. During TAAA, surgeons replace a large section of your descending and abdominal aorta with either a surgical Dacron graft or a stent graft Your TAAA repair may involve the portion of your aorta that supplies blood to vessels connected to your kidneys and other abdominal organs. In this case, your surgeon will reconnect those vessels to the new graft. TAAA repair may be an open surgery or a minimally invasive procedure.
