Coronary Microvascular Disease

What Is Coronary Microvascular Disease?

Coronary microvascular disease (MVD) is a type of heart disease. It affects the heart’s smallest blood vessels (microvessels). MVD is also called small vessel disease or microangiopathy.

MVD is associated with other health conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure and inflammation.

Experts from Emory Heart & Vascular are here to help with your heart condition.

Coronary Microvascular Disease Symptoms

MVD symptoms include:

  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Pain or discomfort in the left arm, jaw, neck or back
  • Shortness of breath

Diagnosing Coronary Microvascular Disease

Doctors at Emory Healthcare use several tests to diagnose MVD. These include:

  • Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): A cardiac MRI looks at blood flow through your microvessels.
  • Coronary reactivity testing: This test measures how well your microvessels respond to stress.
  • Echocardiogram: An echocardiogram is an ultrasound test. This test looks for irregularities and checks how well your heart pumps blood.
Emory Healthcare cardiovascular experts offer several treatment options for MVD.
