There are several types of aortic root surgeries. In some, surgeons replace your aortic valve. In others, they repair your existing valve.
- Mechanical Composite Root Replacement: This is for people with aortic root aneurysms and abnormal aortic valve leaflets. Your surgeon removes your aortic root and replaces it with a surgical graft that contains a mechanical valve.
- Tissue Valve Conduit Repair: This is similar to the mechanical composite root replacement. Your surgeon replaces your aortic root with a graft that contains a bioprosthetic valve.
- Reimplantation Valve-Sparing Root Replacement (VSRR): This is the optimal procedure if you have an aortic root aneurysm and normal aortic valve leaflets. Your surgeon inserts a customized graft to replace the diseased aortic root tissue. Then, they reimplant the aortic valve into this graft.
- Ross Procedure: This procedure involves the transfer of the pulmonary valve to the aortic root position to provide an autologous solution for aortic valve disease. The pulmonary valve is replaced with a cadaveric pulmonary valve.
