Atherosclerosis

What Is Atherosclerosis?

Atherosclerosis is the build-up and hardening of plaque in the heart’s arteries. Plaque is made of fatty deposits, cholesterol, and other substances.

If you have atherosclerosis, your arteries narrow, and less blood reaches your heart muscle. In addition, blood clots can form on the surface of the plaque. This can lead to coronary artery disease, heart attack or stroke.

The cardiovascular specialists at Emory Heart & Vascular offer the expert care you need. We will work to find the best treatment option for you.

Atherosclerosis Symptoms

Early-stage atherosclerosis may not have symptoms. As plaque builds up, blood flow is blocked. This can lead to several symptoms, including:

  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Pain after eating
  • Pain or heaviness in legs
  • Weight loss

Men with atherosclerosis can also experience erectile dysfunction.

Cardiovascular experts with Emory Healthcare offer many surgical and non-surgical treatments for atherosclerosis.

Diagnosing Atherosclerosis

Doctors diagnose atherosclerosis with a physical exam, blood tests and imaging tests.

Doctors also use angiography to diagnose the condition. Angiography involves injecting a special dye into your arteries and taking an X-ray to look for blockages.

At Emory Healthcare, we are your health care partner. We’re ready to support you throughout your health journey.
