If you have FH, you need to work with your doctor to treat it. This can help lower your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and reduce your risk of additional heart problems.
An important part of your treatment is following a healthy lifestyle. This includes:
- Check your cholesterol and blood pressure regularly
- Do not smoke
- Eat a nutritious diet
- Exercise consistently
- Limit alcohol intake
- Maintain a healthy weight
But these changes alone are not enough to lower your LDL to a normal level. A gene mutation causes FH, so you must also take medication.
Regularly taking medication, exercising and eating a healthy diet can manage FH and decrease your risk of heart disease.
At Emory Healthcare, we can develop a treatment plan that is right for you.
