ICDs & Pacemakers

Your Partner for ICD & Pacemaker Treatment

Emory Heart & Vascular electrophysiologists may recommend special implantable devices to control your irregular heartbeat. They may suggest an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) or a pacemaker.

  • ICD: This device can deliver life-saving electrical shocks to treat fast, dangerous arrhythmias from the bottom chambers of the heart, such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. ICDs are often used to treat weak or enlarged hearts.
  • Pacemaker: This device is used to prevent your heart from beating too slowly. It may also be used sometimes to treat weak or enlarged hearts

Protecting your heart long-term requires follow-up care. We will schedule visits with you every six to 12 months to make sure your ICD or pacemaker is working correctly.

Arrhythmias happen when your heart’s electrical signals make it beat too fast, too slow or in an inconsistent pattern. AFib is a very fast, irregular heartbeat.
