Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Program

Your Partner in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Treatment

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) increases your risk of sudden cardiac death and irregular heartbeats. You need specialty care to protect your heart.

The hypertrophic cardiomyopathy care team at Emory Heart & Vascular is here to help. Our team includes cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiac electrophysiologists. They work with you to create a personalized treatment plan based on your unique needs. They also perform research and clinical trials to provide novel therapies – new, advanced treatments – to provide more options and better outcomes for patients in our care and for future patients.

Your Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Treatment Plan

Our cardiovascular specialists understand that each patient is unique. So, your treatment plan for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy should be, too.

Your expert care team will work with you to create a plan that may include:

  • Medication: Some medicines relax your heart muscle to improve function. Others fix irregular heartbeats. For example, our experts may prescribe a blood thinner to lower your blood clot risk if you have atrial fibrillation
  • Implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs)These small, implanted devices lower your risk of sudden cardiac death if you have an irregular heartbeat. They deliver small, painless electric shocks to get your heart back into a regular rhythm.
  • PacemakersThese small, implanted devices are like ICDs. We use pacemakers less often than ICDs to treat hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
  • Catheter-based therapy (alcohol septal ablation): This is a minimally invasive procedure. Our expert injects alcohol into your arteries to destroy thickened heart muscle. This improves your blood flow and relieves your symptoms.
  • Cardiac Surgery (septal myectomy): Our experts may recommend heart surgery if other treatments don’t work. In this surgery, we remove part of your thickened heart muscle to improve blood flow.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition that causes the heart muscle to thicken, stiffen and enlarge. This makes it harder for your heart to pump blood.
